Your British Superbike Showdown 2017 contenders – Peter Hickman

Peter Hickman is the great all-rounder. As much at home at Brands Hatch as he is on the Glencrutchery Road, the Lincolnshire rider is top-three contender for the first time this year and has managed it with consistency.

Only the Smiths BMW rider and Honda’s Jason O’Halloran have scored points in every race this year, and Hickman’s winning form on the roads can only have helped him understand the S1000RR more and more.

Hickman’s 193 points and nine podium credits have come about with one win at Thruxton and two other podiums but while those about him have failed to finish here and there, Hickman has plugged away and is only 26 points behind the best-funded team in the paddock, Be Wiser Ducati.

Fifteen points separates him from O’Halloran in fourth place, so another consistent weekend for the Louth rider should see him move comfortably into the Showdown, which he missed by only ten points in 2016.

“I think excited is the key word for me ahead of Silverstone this weekend. I have been close to making the Showdown a couple of times before and I have missed out because of a couple of points here or there and this year we have jumped in at the moment, but it is still all to play for,” said Hickman.

“We have three races so there is a lot that can still happen. I am 37 points ahead of seventh so I have a good cushion but it only takes one DNF and someone else to win one and suddenly that goes down to 12 points.

“I am looking forward to it and I am excited to get started. I think there will be some interesting moves going on, especially in race two and three! It is going to be hard fought like it is every weekend in this championship and it will be tough. Silverstone lends itself to that kind of close racing though and its fast and the racing is always close! We might see some harsh moves being pulled as people fight for their place in the Showdown.

“I have been on the podium and won at Silverstone in the last two years so I am hoping for the same again if not better. Coming away from Cadwell Park with a double podium for the Smiths Racing team was fantastic and I really want to get a place in the Showdown for them and all their hard work to make it happen.”
