2017 FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY KING RANCH LONG-TERM UPDATE 1: AMERICA’S GATEWAY DRUG

“Can I borrow your truck?” I knew that question would replace “How are you?” in my coworkers’ lexicon as soon as my long-term Ford F-250 Super Duty showed up. I just didn’t think it would be so darn immediate. “Are you using the F-250 this weekend?” Actual quotes from actual co-workers. “Hey Jonny—I’m getting married next week in Utah, and I wondered if I could borrow the King Ranch?” Let’s face it: Americans love pickup trucks, and I think I might have figured out why. Hear me out. Many moons ago I…

KIA OPTIMA DIESEL WAGON FORBIDDEN FRUIT REVIEW

Diesel wagons are rare in the U.S., yet two-thirds of all Kia Optima sales in Europe are expected to be the wagon and the volume powertrain is a turbodiesel. Intrigued by this forbidden fruit, I recently spent some time in the English countryside driving a new KiaOptima diesel wagon in attractive GT-Line S trim. Although a diesel-powered wagon definitely won’t reverse the U.S. market’s transition away from sedans and toward crossovers, keep reading for insights on the English-spec Kia, whose lengthy name is officially the Optima Sportswagon 1.7 CRDi GT-Line S. The diesel…

2017 MINI COUNTRYMAN FULL LINE FIRST TEST

Philosophical discussions about whether the Mini Countryman is really a Mini will go on indefinitely, but for practical purposes, it’s a distinction without a difference. It’s here, it’s made by Mini, and—as the brand’s best-selling model by a slim margin—it’s not going anywhere. Instead, we must concern ourselves with whether it’s any good. This second-generation Countryman uses the same formula as the original with a host of upgrades. New sheetmetal is a given, but the most substantial changes occur under the stubby hood. The base engine is now a 1.5-liter…

2017 JEEP RENEGADE SPORT LONG-TERM UPDATE 3: GOING OFF-ROAD AND UP MOUNTAINS

Underwhelming off-road performance.” That’s what we said about the Jeep Renegadetwo years ago when it failed to make the finalist cut for SUV of the Year. And with Colorado fourteeners in my sights, that’s what I was hoping to test for myself. Leading up to the trip, I was worried about the Renegade’s ability to reach trailheads 12,000 feet above sea level, my concern only surpassed by the doubt I had in my own ability to climb the final 2,000 feet to the summit. Features editor Christian Seabaugh, who wrote the…

2018 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM FIRST DRIVE REVIEW

True luxury isn’t rushed. It takes Patek Philippe nine months to make a basic watch and more than two years to finish one of its more complicated timepieces. Pedrazzini builds just six of its exquisite mahogany launches a year, each boat taking 6,000 hours to handcraft. And Rolls-Royce designers and engineers took almost three years just to figure how to make the unique glass-covered dash, called The Gallery, that’s the centerpiece of the spectacular interior of the all-new Phantom sedan. Range Rover Velar vs Porsche Cayenne vs Audi Q7: luxury SUV mega-test

The defining sound
of this year’s most-wanted luxury car, the new Range Rover Velar, isn’t generated by its multi-cylinder diesel engine, some clever active exhaust or even
its 17-speaker audio system. It’s the rhythmic sequence of gentle whirrs and puffs made by the car’s pillowy, beautifully upholstered ‘massager’ driver’s seat as it sets about discreetly but determinedly kneading the tension out of your lower back. It’s a sound you can hear because the noise of the car’s V6 motor descends to a barely audible background hum at a motorway cruise – and…

MOT exemption for cars over 40 years old arrives in May 2018

The Department for Transport has announced that classic cars more than 40 years old will be exempt from MOT testing, with owners voluntarily electing for an MOT if they feel their car needs one. Currently, only cars from before 1960 are exempt, which represents 197,000 cars on UK roads. The new rules will exempt a further 293,000 cars from MOTs. The thinking behind the decision, according to the DfT, is that these cars are “usually maintained in good condition and used on few occasions”. The decision also eases concerns that garages may not…

Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate 4Matic+ 2017 review

What is it? The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate might well be the car to dethrone the Audi RS6 as the quintessential modern-day super-wagon. The Audi’s appeal lies in its handsome styling, massive grip, faultless stability and enormous straight-line performance. If the AMG can add some level of agility and on-the-limit precision to that set of attributes, it’ll swiftly unseat the Ingolstadt charger and assume the role of king of the super-estates. The booted Merc uses the same drivetrain and underpinnings as the E63 S Saloon, which is probably, all things considered, the fastest and…

2017 Honda Accord REVIEW

Starting Price: $23,990 (with auto transmission) | Price yours Above Average: Driving refinement, reliability, resale value Below Average: Infotainment interface Consensus: One of the most reputable and recommendable cars in the country If the country ever has to decide on just one car, we need to take a long look at the Accord. Just for fun we asked Google how many times the terms “Accord” and “gold standard” have appeared together on KBB.com over the years, but the results were spotty. The exercise itself, however, conveys the point: The Honda Accord remains a benchmark not just for…
